Control The Controllables

As a financial advisor in Nashville, Brentwood, and Franklin, TN, Steve Alverson, Certified Financial Planner Practitioner and Financial Planner, shares some financial advice below.

Control What You can control, freedom through structure.

My football coach in college once said, "Control the controllables."

Summer time is a busy time in our household. The days are less structured without school for the children. If we don’t take control of the day, the day will take control of us.

The same is true with your finances. If you do not structure how your income is spent, you may have great intent but overtime you may end up playing a game of whack a mole without gaining any traction. From problems with your house, dining out, entertainment, expensive clothing and accessories, conveniences and ‘necessities’ without control can end up taking a lions share of the budget without you even noticing.

Best advice: Control the controllables, plan your finances before each time you receive money. If you don’t have a plan for your income, it will eventually make a plan for you.

As my coach said, "If we control what we can control every play[day], we will end up on the other side with a win."
